Summer 2026 is Here!

We're at the end of May, and that means it's farmer market and outdoor event season. Yahoo!
This past Saturday, the Lummi Island Saturday Market opened for the season, and I'm so happy I'll be attending again this year regularly. It is the only summer Saturday market Hayes Street Candle Company will be participating in, so I'll be out there every weekend. Double yahoo!
Last year I stretched myself too thin. Like, way too thin. Part of it was just general excitement about doing markets, part of it was wanting to try different events, and most of it was just my impulsive nature. I drove all over Whatcom, Skagit, and Snohomish counties, and it was just too much. This summer I'm keeping it easy on myself.
So how'd I settle on Lummi Island being my venue of choice? A few reasons:
- It is incredibly easy to get to. It's a few miles to Gooseberry Point (the ferry terminal), the line-up is short, the ride-over takes 7ish minutes, and the market is one block from where the ferry docks. The return trip is just as simple.
- It keeps me honest. My ADHD brain (I was officially diagnosed earlier this year, BTW) knows that I must be at the ferry terminal at a specific time, or I'll have to wait a full hour for the next boat. My anxiety brain is afraid that the boat will fill up and I won't get a spot, so I show up super early and wait.
- The people are friendly and welcoming. Whether they be locals or visitors, the people on Lummi Island are great. Maybe it’s because it’s summer time and they live in a peaceful place with no stop lights (not kidding about that), or maybe it’s because they’re visiting for the weekend, or maybe it’s just because life is better on an island--even if that island is in the Pacific Northwest and not the Caribbean.
- Lummi Island is home to a variety of artists. It might seem strange that a place that only has 1,000 residents would have a lot of creators, but it does. Last summer, I picked up various gifts to set aside for Christmas, and it was fun to meet the actual artists in person.
- The market is small and intimate, but it packs a good punch. The Lummi Island Saturday Market offers fresh produce, pottery, books, quilts, jewelry, and food. There is also a new coffee stand with outdoor seating--perfect for relaxing on a lovely island day.
