Candle Safety & Best Practices
To ensure a safe, enjoyable burn, please follow these guidelines every time you use your Hayes Street Candle Company products.
Before Lighting
-
Trim the wick to ¼ inch before each burn to prevent soot, mushrooming, and excessive flame height.
-
Remove any wick trimmings, matches, or debris from the candle surface.
-
Place the candle on a stable, heat-resistant surface away from drafts, vents, and direct sunlight.
While Burning
-
Never leave a burning candle unattended.
-
Keep candles out of reach of children and pets.
-
Burn for 2–4 hours at a time to achieve a full melt pool and prevent tunneling.
-
Do not burn candles for more than 4 hours at once, as excessive heat can damage the container.
-
Keep the candle away from flammable objects, curtains, furniture, and décor.
-
If the flame becomes too high or flickers repeatedly, extinguish the candle, trim the wick, and relight after cooling.
Extinguishing the Candle
-
Use a candle snuffer or gently blow out the flame.
-
Avoid extinguishing the flame with the lid—it can damage the lid or cause soot.
-
Allow the candle to cool completely before touching or moving it.
After Burning
-
Stop burning your candle when ½ inch of wax remains to prevent overheating the container.
Additional Tips for Best Results
-
For wood lids: do not use them to extinguish the candle; use them only after the candle has cooled.
-
Soy wax may develop natural frosting or slight color changes—this is normal and does not affect performance.
-
Keep your candle stored in a cool, dry place when not in use to protect the fragrance.
